Ranch Standard Truck Cap
The Ranch Standard represents our most proven design — a full-height aluminum cap engineered for serious truck owners who demand long-term durability without adding hundreds of pounds to their bed. We manufacture every Standard cap in our American facility using aerospace-grade aluminum extrusions and continuous piano hinges that won't sag after years of daily use.
This cap fits full-size pickups from Ford, Chevy, GMC, Ram, and Toyota with a custom-molded seal that keeps dust and rain out even on washboard roads. The frameless side windows give you full visibility while loading, and the front sliding window opens wide enough to pass lumber or kayaks through from the cab. Whether you're a contractor hauling tools five days a week or a weekend outdoorsman protecting gear on long trips, the Standard delivers the utility and weather protection ranch truck caps have been known for since 1974.
Construction & fit details

Aluminum construction & weight savings
We build the Standard cap from aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum extrusions that form a rigid skeleton around the bed. Welded corner joints eliminate the flex you’ll find in riveted caps, and the entire structure weighs between 140 and 165 pounds depending on bed length — roughly half what a comparable fiberglass shell adds to your truck.
The weight difference matters when you’re already carrying a full load or towing near your truck’s rated capacity. Aluminum also resists denting better than thin fiberglass and won’t crack from hail or branch strikes the way gelcoat can. We finish every cap with a marine-grade powder coat in white, black, or silver that bonds directly to the metal and won’t peel or fade after years of sun exposure.

Weatherproof seal & bed access
A continuous EPDM rubber gasket runs the entire perimeter where the cap meets your bed rail. We mold this seal in one piece with radiused corners so there’s no gap for dust to work through on gravel roads. The rear door uses the same compression latch system as our fiberglass caps, with three contact points that pull the door tight against the seal even when the bed flexes over rough terrain.
The frameless side windows slide open on stainless steel tracks and lock in any position with spring-loaded catches. Tempered safety glass resists breakage and provides clear sightlines when you’re backing up to a loading dock or reversing a trailer. The front window slides open a full 18 inches, wide enough to slide an eight-foot 2×4 through from the cab without opening the rear door.
Interior features & cargo management
Inside the cap you’ll find a carpeted headliner that reduces road noise and prevents condensation drips in cold weather. We install a dome light with a three-position rocker switch — on, off, and door-activated — so you can work in the bed after dark without draining your truck battery. The light housing accepts standard 921 wedge bulbs available at any auto parts store.
The roof comes pre-drilled with mounting points spaced to accept aftermarket crossbar systems from Thule, Yakima, and other rack manufacturers. We include stainless steel backing plates that distribute load across the aluminum extrusions so you can safely carry kayaks, lumber, or a rooftop tent without worrying about stress cracks. The interior height gives you 18 to 22 inches of clearance depending on your truck model, enough room to stand toolboxes upright or stack plastic totes two high.

Common questions about the Ranch Standard cap
Yes, the Standard cap works with most spray-in bedliners including Line-X, Rhino Liner, and Speedliner. The C-clamps bolt through your bed rail stake pockets and sit above the liner surface, so the liner doesn't interfere with installation. The EPDM seal compresses enough to create a weatherproof bond even with the added thickness of a spray-in coating.
If you have a drop-in plastic bedliner, we recommend removing it before installing the cap. Drop-in liners can shift slightly and prevent the seal from making consistent contact with your bed rail.
The Ranch Standard cap weighs between 140 and 165 pounds depending on your bed length. A comparable fiberglass cap typically weighs 250 to 300 pounds. The weight difference comes from aluminum's superior strength-to-weight ratio — we can use thinner material without sacrificing structural rigidity.
This 100+ pound savings matters if you're already carrying a full load or towing near your truck's rated capacity. It also makes installation easier since two people can lift the cap into place without needing additional help.
The Standard cap comes with a powder coat finish in white, black, or silver that bonds directly to the aluminum. You can have the cap professionally painted after purchase, but most body shops will need to lightly sand the powder coat and apply an etching primer before color coats.
If color matching is your top priority, our fiberglass cap might be a better choice since it comes with paintable gelcoat that accepts automotive paint without special prep work. The aluminum cap's powder coat finish is extremely durable on its own and most customers find one of the three standard colors works well with their truck.
Aluminum caps need very little maintenance. Wash the exterior with soap and water a few times a year to remove road salt and dirt buildup. Spray the door hinges and latches with silicone lubricant twice a year to keep them operating smoothly, especially if you drive in dusty conditions.
The powder coat finish won't oxidize or fade like paint, so you don't need to wax or polish the cap. Check the C-clamp bolts once a year to make sure they're still snug — they can loosen slightly as your truck bed flexes over time. The EPDM seal should last 10+ years before it needs replacement.
The Standard cap includes pre-drilled mounting points on the roof that accept aftermarket crossbar systems from Thule, Yakima, and other major rack manufacturers. If you currently have a bed rack that mounts to your truck's stake pockets, you'll need to remove it before installing the cap since the C-clamps use those same mounting points.
Most under-bed toolboxes and wheel-well boxes will fit without modification. Low-profile toolboxes that sit against the cab may interfere with the front window depending on your specific truck model. We recommend measuring your toolbox height before ordering if clearance is a concern.
Yes, installation takes two people about 30 minutes with basic hand tools. We include a paper template you tape to your bed rail to mark the C-clamp positions before lifting the cap into place. The clamps bolt through your existing stake pocket holes so there's no drilling required.
The cap weighs 140-165 pounds depending on bed length, so you'll need a second person to help lift it. Once it's positioned, you tighten the clamp bolts with a socket wrench and adjust the rear door latch if needed. We include detailed instructions with photos for every step of the process.
Every Standard cap includes a five-year structural warranty covering welds, aluminum extrusions, hinges, and latches against defects in materials or workmanship. The powder coat finish is warranted for three years against peeling, flaking, or excessive fading from UV exposure.
We stock replacement parts for every component including windows, seals, latches, and hinges. Many Ranch caps from the 1990s are still on the road today, and we've maintained parts availability for models going back more than two decades. If you ever need service, our customer support team can walk you through any repair or adjustment.
